The Portland Chapter of Surfrider Foundation urges you to vote NO on Measure 26-156 on the May 2014 ballot to protect our city's watersheds.
Funded by corporate interests including some of the city's biggest polluters, Measure 26-156 would transfer control of Portland's Water Bureau and the Bureau of Environmental Service's water and sewer services to a seven member board. This would threaten many of Portland's programs to restore watershed function and protect water quality. Strategies that could be curtailed or eliminated include: building greenstreets, planting trees, and protecting flood areas and stream corridors to address urban stormwater. Furthermore, proponent's claims that the measure will save ratepayer money are suspect. The Oregonian has reported the findings of an independent research committee which state that there's no evidence the measure would lower sewer and water rates. The Portland Chapter of Surfrider believes that our local watersheds are invaluable resources that need to be protected and restored. Please vote NO on Measure 26-156.
