Well, the rain held off and the crew was on point for Green Streets North this month! All the gritty garbage dudes showed up, thanks Ian, Phil, Al, Tim, and Luke. Nancy out litter-cleaned-up us all, with her steady pace, laughter and ability to put up with 6 surf obsessed guys bantering constantly.
Much fun was had!
In the end our 7 volunteers picked up 70 gallons of litter off our streets and out of our local North Portland bioswales. Phil gets the award for weirdest litter this month with a fake eyeball... Somebody must be celebrating Halloween early and may potentially be walking around Portland with poor depth perception, so be ware!
After successfully collecting 70 gallons of litter (roughly the volume of your refrigerator), the NoPo crew got to be taste testers for Gregg's first successful attempt at homemade ice cream. Choco- mallow-graham-madness appeared to be the favorite. Ian is very loosely quoted as saying "mwashmallowchocoinsanity is the next craze to hit the Portland food scene!"
It looks like it's going to be a tight race between Gregg's NoPo crew and Jacque's Eastside brigade in our Rise Above Plastics Green Streets Showdown this month. The Eastsiders need to in some combination outdo our collection volume, number of volunteers, and weirdest litter. Enduring challenging weather is the tiebreaker, and if you've looked at the forecast, Niagra Falls appears to be rolling in from the Pacific over the next few days! It's going to be down to the wire folks!
Join Jacque and the Eastside brigade next Tuesday, Oct 28th at 6pm. They are meeting at Blackberry Yogurt Lounge (2137 E Burnside St, Portland, OR 97214.... SE 22nd and Burnside). There will be FREE frozen yogurt! Please dress for weather and bring headlamp or flashlight! RSVP with Jacque at
