Honor California Sea Lions

Designate the California Sea Lion as Official State Pinniped

California has long celebrated its unique natural heritage through official state symbols — and SB 1286, authored by Senator Laura Richardson, would add a beloved coastal icon to that list. This bill would designate the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) as the official state pinniped of California, recognizing its ecological significance and deep connection to the California coastline.

Sea lions are among the most visible and charismatic marine mammals along the California coast. From the docks of Santa Barbara to the rocks of Point Reyes, they are a constant, familiar presence — drawing beachgoers, inspiring wildlife enthusiasts, and reminding coastal communities of the rich marine life that makes California's shoreline extraordinary. But beyond their cultural familiarity, sea lions play a meaningful ecological role. As marine predators, they help regulate fish populations and maintain balance within ocean food webs. Like many marine mammals, they also serve as important indicators of ocean health, offering scientists and conservationists valuable signals about the state of our coastal ecosystems.

Designating the California sea lion as an official state symbol does more than celebrate a popular animal — it sends a message about California's values. The state has consistently been a national leader in marine protection, from establishing marine protected areas to banning harmful fishing practices. Honoring the sea lion reinforces that commitment and creates a tangible, public-facing symbol of California's dedication to ocean stewardship.

Official state symbols also carry real educational value, sparking curiosity in young Californians and fostering a sense of connection to the natural world. That connection is the foundation of lasting conservation support.

SB 1286 is a simple, meaningful gesture toward the ocean — and the creatures that call it home.
