Change in Leadership

Every two years, our chapters turn over their executive committees and it seems every time this happens I think to myself, "how are we ever going to replace these awesome leaders?" I'm always humbled two years later when inevitably the chapter just keeps getting stronger.  This past Tuesday, once again, the Portland Chapter turned over the reigns of executive leadership, voting in 5 new members to the board. I'd like to take just a moment, the least I can do to recognize the outstanding leadership and work of the outgoing executives and highlight the incoming volunteers, to tell you what this means to me, to Surfrider and to your community to have people like this in chapter leadership roles. Matt Spencer, Tara Brock, Gregg Hayward, Jacque Rodriguez, Jocelyn Gary and Mason Brock have been more or less running all things Portland Surfrider for the past two years, and then some. They've done this with the utmost pride and maturity that an organization like Surfrider (or any organization for that matter) could wish for. While some have retained some leadership roles in the chapter, many have been engaged at this level for well over two years and have decided to step down and let some new volunteers take ownership and direction of the chapter.

At this point I'd like to stress volunteers. These individuals have spent more than their time and money dedicated to improving our ocean resources, waves and your local community. They've spent emotions, tears, laughter, successes and even some disappointments together as volunteers. There have been weddings and soon to come babies. They've worked tirelessly, despite professional and personal obstacles along the way. I have a hard time wrapping my head around exactly how these individuals have been able to continue to give like they do, but I think it has a lot to do with our tribe, our common beliefs and interests that bond us together like no other organization can. I implore you to buy these individuals a beer, pin a medal on them, or at least slap them on the back (gently) and thank them the next time you see them.

Despite the massive shoes they've left to fill, I'm extremely proud and excited to announce the new executive committee for the Portland Chapter. I have no doubt that just like two years ago when I wondered the same thing, these individuals will take the chapter to places they've never imagined. They will surprise me, just like the past 4 executive committees I've worked with in the Portland Chapter, realizing victories, program growth and improvements in their lives and community that they fully own. So, without any more hesitation....drumroll for the new executive committee of Surfrider Foudnation Portland Chapter:

Chair – Kirsten Bracht
