Rain Garden Project with Peninsula School

The Portland Chapter is excited to announce that we are partnering with Peninsula School and Rain City Gardens on an Ocean Friendly Garden project this fall!  With the generous support of Portland's Community Watershed Stewardship Program, we will design and install a large rain garden in the school's central courtyard. The project will help protect water quality through expanding rainwater infiltration on the Peninsula School property. Up to five downspouts servicing approximately 11,400 square feet of roof area may eventually be disconnected from the combined sewer, helping to reduce overflow events. The design of the rain garden is being developed by Peninsula students and teachers and Hannah Nickerson of Rain City Gardens. Surfrider volunteers will help install the rain garden during work parties on Sunday, October 20th and Sunday, October 27th. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jocelyn Gary at garyjocelyn at gmail.com. In addition, we will have a special presentation on the project at the Portland Chapter meeting on October 2nd at 7:30 pm at the SE Lucky Lab (915 SE Hawthorne Blvd). See you there!
