Surfrider Portland + Bioswales = Love

Surfrider Portland Vounteers have been helping out on the PortlandGreen Streets Program, which helps reduce
storm water flow into the City's watersheds.
We help keep bioswales, little island oasis of stormwater bliss on the sides of many of the streets of Portland, free and clear of debris and litter. That way the function properly, collecting stormwater, with the plants in the bioswale cleaning the water, and allowing it to eventually percolate down in

to our groundwater supply.  Bioswales are amazing, and Portland is one of the top city's in the world for implementing this new method of natural stormwater management.

This past month we had a hearty group of volunteers that were egar to give some Valentine love to some of the bioswales in North Portland.

Volunteers Krista, Mike, Al, Damion, Jeff and Gregg collected 15 gallons of plastic and metal litter. Half we probably found in the 10 bioswales we cleaned, and the other half we picked up on our walk between the swales.   Its a pretty fun time, with lots of jokes and laughter to be had.

As is tradition, we enjoyed some delicious desserts and hot tea after the cold walk. We chowed down on brownies and chai tea. Come help out at our next Green Streets cleanup, the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 6-8:30pm. Contact Gregg to find out more!
